This year is off to a great start in math!! The students will be busy preparing for the opening of and working at the concession stand. They will count money, give change back, decide what items to sell and what prices to sell the items for. We will study place value of whole numbers and decimals; add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, decimals, fractions and mixed numbers; study expressions, patterns, and relationships of numbers; find volume of solids; convert units of measurement; study data; classify plane figures; and use coordinate geometry this year.
In addition to the fifth grade math series, we also use a program called IXL. Our textbook aligns with IXL, so the starred skills in IXL are the skills we have done or are currently
practicing in our curriculum. Starred IXL skills are considered their practice for graded assignments. IXL will differentiate each student's progress through the skill. So learning gaps are filled and students don't do extra problems on skills they have already mastered. Each of the IXL skills are worth a possible 10 points. To best prepare students for the test, the Graded IXL skills for each topic are expected to be completed by the day of the topic test.
We also use a computer program called MobyMax Fact Fluency to practice and become proficient with multiplication, addition, subtraction and division facts. It's a program that makes the drill and practice of math facts fun and rewarding for the students.
